Money-saving tips

How to Save on George Washington Bridge Tolls

Regular commuters crossing the GW Bridge can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars per year with the right combination of E-ZPass, timing, and commuter programs. Here are the most effective strategies.

Travel during off-peak hours

Save $2.00 per crossing

E-ZPass off-peak rate is $11.75 vs $13.75 during peak hours. Off-peak hours are all times except Monday to Friday 6-10 AM and 4-9 PM. Shifting a 5-day commute to off-peak saves over $1,000 per year.

Get E-ZPass if you do not have it

Save $2.25-$4.25 per crossing

The cash/mail-in rate is $16.00 per crossing, compared to $11.75-$13.75 with E-ZPass. For a 10-crossing-per-week commuter, this saves $260 to $500 per year. E-ZPass accounts are free to open in New York and New Jersey.

Consider carpooling

Split toll cost with co-workers

While the GW Bridge does not offer a specific carpool toll discount, sharing a vehicle with 2-4 colleagues means splitting the toll. On a peak E-ZPass toll of $13.75, carpooling 4 people each pay just $3.44 per crossing instead of $13.75.

Use the E-ZPass commuter plan

Up to $60/month rebate

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a Commuter Plan for frequent crossers. Drivers who make 20 or more E-ZPass trips per month on the same vehicle in a calendar month receive a credit. Check the PANYNJ website for current rebate amounts.

Plan your route to use the lower-level entrance

No toll difference but saves time

The George Washington Bridge has an upper and lower level. Both levels charge the same toll, but traffic patterns differ. Using the lower level (Route 9A approach) can reduce idle time in backups, saving fuel costs.

Consider alternative crossings for occasional trips

Up to $7.25 cheaper

The Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, and Lincoln Tunnel are alternatives. Some routes to northern NJ can use the George Washington Bridge for the same cost or less. See our alternatives page for route comparisons.

Maximum savings example

A daily commuter (10 crossings/week) who switches from cash ($16.00) to off-peak E-ZPass ($11.75) and qualifies for the commuter rebate can save over $2,500 per year. Even a part-time bridge user making 4 crossings per week saves over $200 annually just by switching to E-ZPass.
